Cholesterol

Hridaya roga (heart disease) in Ayurveda is the accumulation of cholesterol in the arteries leading to the heart and the resultant narrowing of the lumen.  Alfalfa, arjuna, coriander, garlic, guggulu and holy basil are herbs that help in controlling the level of LDL cholesterol.  Keeping the calorie count low by avoiding chocolates, ice creams and red meat items, reducing intake of fried foods, ground nut oil, etc., stopping smoking and alchohol consumption, drinking lot of water, consuming more fresh vegetables and fruits, using soy and soy products, taking cow’s milk and milk products while avoiding buffalo milk and milk products are general suggestions in Ayurveda for keeping cholesterol levels in control.
